Nonmonotonic Reasoning as a Temporal Activity
نویسنده
چکیده
A dynamic reasoning system (DRS) is an adaptation of a conventional formal logical system that explicitly portrays reasoning as a temporal activity, with each extralogical input to the system and each inference rule application being viewed as occurring at a distinct time step. Every DRS incorporates some well-defined logic together with a controller that serves to guide the reasoning process in response to user inputs. Logics are generic, whereas controllers are application-specific. Every controller does, nonetheless, provide an algorithm for nonmonotonic belief revision. The general notion of a DRS comprises a framework within which one can formulate the logic and algorithms for a given application and prove that the algorithms are correct, i.e., that they serve to (i) derive all salient information and (ii) preserve the consistency of the belief set. This paper illustrates the idea with ordinary first-order predicate calculus, suitably modified for the present purpose, and an example. The example revisits some classic nonmonotonic reasoning puzzles (Opus the Penguin, Nixon Diamond) and shows how these can be resolved in the context of a DRS, using an expanded version of firstorder logic that incorporates typed predicate symbols. All concepts are rigorously defined and effectively computable, thereby providing the foundation for a future software implementation.

A Compositional Reasoning System for Executing Nonmonotonic Theories of Reasoning
An agent that is reasoning about the world often needs to draw (defeasible) conclusions that are not logically entailed by its (incomplete) knowledge about the world. Nonmonotonic reasoning systems can be used to model these reasoning patterns. Implementations of agents that can reason in a defeasible manner need to include an implemented nonmonotonic reasoning system. In different applications...
متن کاملExecutable Temporal Logic for Non-Monotonic Reasoning
In this paper we view nonmonotonic reasoning as a (special kind of) process. As temporal logic is a common formalism to specify and derive properties of processes, we introduce a variant of temporal logic as a general specification language for reasoning processes. We show that it is possible to execute finite specifications in this language, which leads to executability of a large class of fin...
متن کاملCausal Networks and Nonmonotonic Temporal Reasoning
We show that the theory of causation that makes use of causal networks is intimately related to nonmonotonic temporal reasoning. Applying the theory of causal networks in a logical context yields a new approach to nonmonotonic temporal reasoning that can be proven to be a generalization and/or correction of many existing ones, and that provides new insights on the old question on how, and wheth...
متن کاملDefault Reasoning, Nonmonotonic Logics, and the Frame Problem
Nonmonotonic formal systems have been proposed as an extension to classical first-order logic that will capture the process of human “default reasoning” or “plausible inference” through their inference mechanisms just as modus ponena provides a model for deductive reasoning. But although the technical properties of these logics have been studied in detail and many examples of human default reas...
متن کاملSpecification of nonmonotonic reasoning
Two levels of description of nonmonotonic reasoning are distinguished. For these levels semantical formalizations are given. The first level is defined semantically by the notion of belief state frame, the second level by the notion of reasoning frame. We introduce two specification languages to describe nonmonotonic reasoning at each of the levels: (1) a specification language for level 1, wit...
